A reason to celebrate! UGent-Woodlab turns 50!

Happy Birthday UGent-Woodlab! As a founding member of InnovaWood more than 20 years ago, the UGent-Woodlab has been a strong ally ever since!

Beyond its European networks and excellent staff, the UGent-Woodlab success story is certainly also linked to its silo-breaking interdisciplinary orientation across the forestry-wood chain providing expertise in topics such as wood structure, biodiversity, agroforestry, bioengineering, wood construction and biorefinery.

Professor Van Acker's leadership has been instrumental in the UGent-Woodlab success, and his vision for a more collaborative and integrated approach to wood research have been recognised through his role as President of InnovaWood (2015-2017). Further, close cooperation with the private sector, in international research projects and even tropical regions make them an attractive partner for exploring new horizons.

Congratulations!
I would like to express my congratulations to the UGent-Woodlab. The Woodlab has, under the supervision of Joris Van Acker achieved several innovations and collaborative impacts throughout Europe and beyond.

I have throughout my carrier a good cooperation with the Woodlab and have always been impressed by the quality of your research and presentations at conferences. I hope to see much more interesting research aspire through the Woodlab in the future. Keep up the good work!

Best wishes from Erik Larnøy, President of Innovawood

InnoRenew CoE completes construction of Slovenia’s largest wooden building

The InnoRenew CoE research institute completed the construction of the largest wooden building in Slovenia and acquired a unique facility for research and innovation in the field of renewable materials and healthy living environments.

InnoRenew CoE’s new building stands on 8,200 square meters in Livade, Izola (Slovenia). It is a hybrid combination of timber, concrete and steel. The upper three floors of the main building are entirely wooden, making it the largest wooden building in Slovenia to date. The building houses offices, meeting rooms and research laboratories.

Designed by architects Eva Prelovšek Niemelä and Arne Niemelä, together with scientists from InnoRenew CoE, the building was built according to verified principles of contemporary sustainable building construction. The institute’s scientists monitor and measure how the building works; therefore, it is itself an ongoing research project.

Scientific excellence at InnoRenew CoE and University of Primorska awarded with prestigious European Research Council grant

Dr. Anna Sandak, InnoRenew CoE research group leader and associate professor at the University of Primorska, is the first woman in Slovenia to attain a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant. Dr. Sandak and her team will use the €1.99 million award to develop engineered living materials that interact, adapt and respond to environmental changes.

Dr. Anna Sandak is the first woman in Slovenia to successfully attain a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant. An InnoRenew CoE research group leader and associate professor at the University of Primorska, Dr. Sandak is dedicated to the science of renewable materials and biomimetic solutions for new materials design. Her research promotes the knowledge-based use of bio-inspired materials in modern sustainable buildings.

Wood4Bauhaus - Wood Sector Alliance for the New European Bauhaus

The Wood4Bauhaus Alliance was set up in response to the European Commission’s New European Bauhaus initiative, which was launched by the President Ursula von der Leyen in Sep 2020. The main objective is to shape a better and sustainable future with beautiful, healthy and inclusive living, working and learning spaces as part of a low carbon built environment.

The W4B intends to

1.  Encourage research and innovation for novel and innovative uses of wood in the built environment,

2. Foster new collaborations and co-creation between different stakeholders across disciplines, sectors, and society, and

3. Facilitate knowledge sharing and skills development especially towards future generations.

An online conference was organised in 8 April 2021 titled The New European Bauhaus: How can the wood sector engage, contribute and co-create?”. Around 1200 persons have registered for the conference and the website has had over 6200 views so far.

InnovaWood launched the Alliance together with the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries (CEI-Bois), the European Panel Federation (EPF), the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) and the European Federation of Building and Woodworkers (EFBWW). It was created with support from the project consortia BASAJAUN and WoodCircus with funding from the EU Horizon 2020 programme.

The Alliance provided also direct input to the New European Bauhaus group. Two documents were submitted to the EC in June 2021: “Research Needs and Priorities supporting Sustainable Construction with Nature-based Materials under the European Green Deal” and “Policy recommendations to encourage nature-based materials like wood in construction and renovation of the built environment”.
