InnovaWood is pleased to announce our new study Mapping the European Wood Education Community, conducted as part of the ALLVIEW Erasmus+ Vocational Excellence Platform.
The study reveals key insights into the current state of higher education in the wood industry across Europe:
- 154 institutions offer wood-related higher education programs, with 64 focused primarily on wood and 90 integrating wood within broader disciplines.
- These institutions offer 400 programs at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD levels:
• 158 Bachelor’s (BSc)
• 173 Master’s (MSc)
• 69 PhD programs - Approximately one-third of these programs focus exclusively on wood, while the other two-thirds integrate wood with disciplines like sustainable construction, architecture, and materials science.
- The study also identifies the challenges ahead:
- Traditional wood programs are evolving and merging with broader sustainability narratives. This raises questions about whether the “wood identity” is being weakened.
- Interdisciplinary programs could be key to attracting more students to wood-related fields
This report produced in the Allview Erasmus+ Vocational Excellence Platform project goes deeper, quantifying the community of wood-focused education at bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels in 41 countries of Europe. Overall, this study was driven by the need to better understand the graduate profiles of students, and to gain insights how educational offers align with current and future industry needs.
