[Open Mic: 4 questions to the InnovaWood community] Episode II : What is your favourite wood species and why?

Passion for wood and wood science is at the core of the InnovaWood network.

Its members contribute to the European wood science community in many ways. They are practitioners, researchers, co-authors of scientific publications, and partners in European projects. Together, this diverse expertise shapes how InnovaWood members engage with the field and with each other.

During this year’s General Assembly in Tulln, Florence Kuijl and Eva Ceh asked participants to share their favourite wood specie. And sometimes, the story behind their choice.

Every favourite wood tells a story

The question revealed something interesting: it went beyond the usual boundaries of the room. Researchers and non-researchers alike had an answer, each for their own reasons.

A favourite species can reflect someone’s background, the landscapes they know, the career they have built, or the specific properties of a material they have worked with. As a result, the answers shared during this year’s GA covered a wide range of species, from native European woods to others from further afield and each came with a personal story.

This diversity reflects InnovaWood itself: a community spanning countries and disciplines, connected by a shared material and a genuine curiosity about what wood can achieve.

And you, what is your favourite wood species?
